Northwestern struggles to put out the fire

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald uses the phrase "putting out the fire" to refer to his defense playing tough and halting the opponent's momentum. On Heroes Day at Ryan Field, the Wildcat defense not only failed to put out the fire; it let the fire burn almost all the way to a loss.

For Northwestern, all wins aren't created equal

This was supposed to be a tasty, frosted cakewalk.Instead, despite an advantage on paper in just about everything, Northwestern managed to stink up the three-quarters empty kitten box known as Ryan Field and let a sorry Eastern Michigan team keep tabs with a wannabe major conference power.Or maybe this is just the state of Big Ten football these days. Considering the rest of the dismal outings by other members of the league, maybe the Wildcats are lucky.Moments after Stefan Demos hit a monster 49-yard field goal for the 27-24 NU win, the team went over to the depleted student section and lead the band in the fight song.

Supreme Court justice visits Northwestern U. School of Law

Trading her black robe for a black shawl, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg shared her vast knowledge of American politics and legal lore at Northwestern University's Law School on Tuesday as part of the Howard J. Trienens Visiting Judicial Scholar program.
